Loom

Artworks, Póvoa do Varzim

Henri Michaux says “to create a being one must create a situation”. In this exhibition I show a small group of paintings on glass of various sizes. The scale, temperature and consistency of the material – glass – dictates the visual rhythm between the paintings and in each one this rhythm comes from the composition that insists on certain geometric forms that can also be found in Indian Tantric drawings and El Lissitzky’s posters. This is a result of four months of residency at ArtWorks, Póvoa do Varzim. The chalange was to work with the factory’s rubble – what a rubble! – I took the large window glasses and started from there. Tantra (/ˈtʌntrə, ˈtæn-/; Sanskrit: तन्त्र, literally "loom, weave, system") denotes the esoteric traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism that co-developed most likely about the middle of the 1st millennium AD. The term tantra, in the Indian tradition, also means any systematic broadly applicable "text, theory, system, method, instrument, technique or practice”.
